Why Sleep is So Vital for Peak Performance

As my friend Company Egg founder Sean Rigo recently reminded me, sleep is the new status symbol for the elite (with media mogul Arianna Huffington really popularizing and carry the flag for the Get-More-Sleep cause).

Quality sleep is essential for high performers and peak performance. It’s when the body best replenishes its Cosmic Energy, when muscles and cells experience their best repair and rebuilding, when hormones are regulated, and the Central Nervous System and brain gain much-deserved and vital rest and recovery. Your relationship with shuteye will either promote greater peace, calm and strength inside you — or it will completely undermine it (if you sleep too little or too much). Cheating on sleep for extended periods of time is akin to putting a ticking time bomb inside your body. Eventually the body is going to scream out for relief — usually delivering in the message in some form of sickness, illness or disease.

Here is a pretty good story on MarketWatch (reprinted via NextAvenue.org) for those who appreciate the value of sleep and are seeking greater awareness as to why sleep is so crucial. Any serious and all-natural (chemical-free) pursuit of peak performance must include a deep appreciation for sleep.

* If you’re a driven and hard-working Type-A personality, then making sure you average roughly seven or eight hours of sleep per night is probably a good idea; if you’re on the lazy side of life, and sleep too much and struggle to get out of bed in the morning because you lack motivation and purpose, then perhaps you need to cut back on your sleep and re-wire your brain and your habits to maximize your potential.

This article is geared toward those who are motivated and driven and therefore vulnerable to cheating on sleep in an effort to get more work done, etc..
